We have been to Venice and are now in Switzerland visiting the Bernese Oberland. We just arrived around 3:00. I've gotten behind in my entries so I'm going to do a quick review of some of our favorite things about the cruise that I never got a chance to write about due to technical difficulties or just plain laziness.
Cruise: Day 3
- We had breakfast on deck overlooking the sea. It was a beautiful day.
- There was a really great physical comedian for the after dinner show. He chose Sydney to come down and be his volunteer. He also chose a boy her same age. He had them stand next to each other and said, “Don’t they make a cute couple?” Then he told them to shag balls for him as he tried to juggle. He practiced with them by throwing balls to them. Then he threw two balls to Sydney just to be funny but she ended up catching them both in two different hands. From then on he referred to her as the chosen one. Then he had them practice balancing long feathers on their fingertips, then on their chins. He told them they were going to have a competition to see who could balance it longer. He secretly told Sydney to hold it in her teeth so she would win but the boy knew what he was up to and kept calling him out. The comedian told Sydney to do it right and secretly told the boy to hold it in his teeth. The boy of course held it longer than Sydney could but he pronounced him a cheater and proclaimed Sydney the winner. She was recognized by people for the rest of the cruise and complimented for how well she did.
- John and I went to a spin class at the front of the ship. It was a good effort but we would have needed to do spin classes all day long to work off all the food we ate. We met up with a fellow BYU grad while we were there. The ship turned out to have lots of BYU people on it. I guess we alumni are nothing if not spirited and we like to wear the logo. I assume that’s why the Taiwanese man knew so much about us.
Cruise: Day 4
- Castaway Cay
Cruise: Day 5
- Mostly spent the day inside recovering from sunburns and getting adjusted to the time changes. Fortunately, the cruise ship had movies and cartoons running on TV all day either in your room, on funnel vision in front of the pool, or in their giant theater.
Cruise: Day 6
- We spent most of the day outside on the deck. It was a beautiful day and the sea was really calm.
The best sunset of the cruise
- This was Whitney’s birthday. She had a special one because not only was she on a cruise ship but it happened to be pirate night. Everyone dressed as pirates. Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow both came out for photo ops. There was a huge party on deck after the nightly show with dancing, fireworks and Pirate Mickey zip lining over head and dropping down. She wore a birthday girl sash all day and the towel man made her a birthday cake out of towels. After the pirate party we went down stairs for the after party buffet line to die down. We came back up just in time for them to cut the line off. Whew. Wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on the churros and giant turkey legs. Heaven forbid we miss an opportunity to gorge ourselves.
The closest I will ever be to Johnny Depp

Cruise stops:
Gibraltar
The Rock of Gibraltar was cool
And so were the caves
But our favorite thing was the monkies!
Bryton getting accosted
John mimicking the monkeys
Funchal
In Funchal we tried to go on a hike but it turned out to be too rainy up on the mountain so we came back down and wandered around town. We came across a library. I read a book in Portuguese to the kids and translated as I went with a little help from the librarian.
The toilets in the library
Sitting in one of the gardens
The view from up high
Adorning Sydney's hair with a flower
The walking path on the way back to the cruise ship
